Iceland’s government resigns
Iceland’s Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson announced at a press conference on Sunday that his government, a coalition formed by the Independence Party, the Progressive Party, and the Left-Green Movement, has resigned. Disagreements on immigration, energy policy, and several other areas have led to this decision. The coalition government formed in 2017 and Benediktsson had been the Prime Minister only since April. A new election is expected to be called for November 30; this comes a year earlier than scheduled. Despite the resignation, the government will continue its duties until the new election. If it fails to govern effectively, Benediktsson will step down, leading to an interim government. Recent polls have shown increased support for the opposition Social Democratic Party.
