Løkke initiates new Africa collaboration in Egypt

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has begun concrete steps towards a stronger collaboration with Africa during his visit to Cairo, Egypt. Cairo has been selected as one of four regional hubs in Denmark’s new Africa strategy. Løkke views Egypt as a crucial economy and a bridge between the Arab world and Africa. The Danish embassy in Egypt will now be strengthened with more diplomats. Despite Egypt’s political dilemmas, the discussion with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi will focus on growth and development rather than free elections and democracy. With 30% of Egyptians living in extreme poverty and 20% youth unemployment, Løkke suggests listening rather than preaching in their approach. He recognizes the challenge Sisi faces in creating two million jobs annually for new entrants to the workforce. Løkke’s two-day visit also concentrates on the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians and meetings with Danish company representatives in Egypt.
