Social Democrats seek EU ban on endocrine disruptors

The Danish Social Democratic Party, represented by EU candidate Christel Schaldemose and Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, is pushing for an EU-wide ban on endocrine-disrupting substances to protect fertility. They claim these substances significantly impact health, particularly fertility, and propose that the EU ban should be achieved by implementing a new precautionary principle. Under this principle, products and chemicals would need to be proven safe from disrupting hormones. Furthermore, a new method of evaluating chemicals—in combination rather than individually—to account for ‘cocktail effects’ is proposed. The prime minister also mentioned her mothers experience with cancer due to chemicals, highlighting a general public defenselessness. Lastly, Schaldemose noted that the EU commission has already laid the groundwork for such a ban, implying practicality if supported by a majority.
