Two Danish films in Cannes race

Ali Abbasi’s ‘The Apprentice’ and Magnus von Horn’s ‘The Girl with the Needle’, with Trine Dyrholm, are in the Cannes main competition. Abbasi’s film depicts Donald Trump’s early years with Sebastian Stan as Trump, in a Canada-Denmark-Ireland co-production. ‘The Girl with the Needle’ recounts the true crimes of Dagmar Overbye, who killed numerous illegitimate infants from 1913 to 1920. Both are vying for the Palme d’Or, last won by a Danish film in 2000 with Lars von Trier’s ‘Dancer in the Dark’. Competition includes Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis’. The festival begins May 14.
