Central bank recalls 3.6 billion DKK abroad

Denmark’s Central Bank has initiated an extraordinary purchase of Danish banknotes from foreign banks totaling 3.6 billion Danish kroner. This move relates to certain Danish banknotes, including the 1000-kroner note, becoming invalid after May 31, 2025. Since the announcement that older series notes and the current 1000-kroner note will soon be invalid, 16.8 billion kroner worth of notes have been turned in. There are still 7.7 billion kroner in circulation of notes that will expire. Chief cashier Niels Kaas hopes a recent media campaign and citizen letters will draw attention to the older notes. The special repatriation aims to decrease the outstanding notes. Danish banks ceased purchasing Danish cash from foreign entities two years ago due to anti-money laundering regulations, hampering the ability to exchange Danish cash abroad. The National Bank emphasizes this is a one-time purchase and does not signify the resumption of exchange or use of Danish cash internationally.
