Trump doesn’t rule out tariffs in call with Prime Minister

During a phone call on Wednesday, the incoming U.S. President Donald Trump did not withdraw his threat of punitive tariffs on Danish goods, according to Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. Frederiksen emphasized the desire to avoid any trade conflicts with the U.S. and stated that Denmark is not preparing for any specific U.S. measures yet. Trump’s threat relates to his interest in gaining control over Greenland. In a press conference on January 7, Trump expressed the need for Greenland for U.S. economic security but did not promise to refrain from using military or economic coercion. The Danish Prime Minister also invited Trump to visit Denmark during their 45-minute long ‘forthright’ conversation. The U.S. is Denmark’s largest export country, and Trump is set to assume office on Monday.
