Danish pension funds rise in 2023

The average pension wealth of Danish people over 18 increased by seven percent to 600,200 DKK in 2023, after a decline of 20 percent in 2022 due to rising interest rates causing bond price drops. Despite this recovery, there is still a notable gender gap with women’s average pension wealth being 25 percent less than that of men. Analyst Louise Aggerstrøm Hansen from Danske Bank explains that the gap is due to men’s higher average incomes and women’s shorter working hours and longer breaks from the workforce. Anne-Louise Lindkvist of Sampension adds that women’s growing educational advantage and new paternity leave policies could help reduce this economic disparity over time. The gender difference in pensions is most significant among the elderly, with men in their 80s having double the pension savings of women, while in their 30s the gap is 13 percent.
