Polluted bunker in Randers sparks city-region dispute
There is a disagreement about who should address contaminated material piles at the Nordic Waste site in Randers. Randers Municipality believes Region Midtjylland should take responsibility and decide on the fate of the piles. However, the region has rejected this. The municipality has sought the Environmental Agency’s help in establishing liability, but they declined. Randers’ municipal director, Jesper Kaas Schmidt, states the municipality lacks the authority to remove the piles as it’s not an environmental catastrophe like the landslide. Though responsible for cleaning water pollution, the municipality plans to renounce responsibility for the piles and will inform the region. The situation arose after Nordic Waste abandoned site control in December 2023 and filed for bankruptcy in January 2024. Randers Municipality asserts that removing or covering the piles would expedite water purification.
