Denmark releases funds to UN agency in Gaza

Denmark has decided to release DKK 105 million in aid to UNRWA, the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency in the Middle East, following similar moves by Sweden and the EU. This decision comes after Israel accused UNRWA of involvement in a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. The humanitarian situation in Gaza is dire, with potential famine and a total collapse of social infrastructure, leading to a significant need for humanitarian assistance, according to Danish Development Minister Dan Jørgensen. After dialogue with UNRWA and European nations, and UNRWA’s dismissal of implicated employees and initiation of an internal investigation, Denmark’s requirements have been met, leading to the aid disbursement. Denmark also established a bilateral agreement with UNRWA for ongoing information and control.
