Stores may refuse 1000-krone bill for small purchases

The Danish Ministry of Industry and Business has issued a press release stating that a new bill should allow stores to reject a 1000-krone note for purchases when the payment exceeds the purchase price by more than 500 kroner. This proposal addresses concerns from retailers about customers using a 1000-krone note for minor purchases. The 1000-krone note is slated to become invalid after May 31, 2025, and is currently being phased out. Business minister Morten Bødskov cited instances of buying chewing gum with such a high-denomination note as impractical for shops. The proposed legislation is expected to be presented in April. Business organizations including SMVdanmark and Dansk Erhverv have welcomed the proposal, noting its contributions to practicality, economy, safety, and the fight against money laundering. It’s also stated that the 1000-krone note has been frequently used for economic crimes.
