Denmark boosts hydrogen pipeline with state support
Denmark’s government is fast-tracking a hydrogen pipeline to Germany by offering financial aid and relaxed conditions. Focusing initially on the section from Esbjerg to the German border, this approach defers the initial 360 km pipeline plan. Climate Minister Lars Aagaard stated that connecting Danish hydrogen production to German demand is crucial for developing Denmark’s export of green fuels. Despite past delays, the government now targets a 2030 export start date, backed by a multi-billion-kroner guarantee. The state promises up to eight billion kroner in operating subsidies over 30 years. The hydrogen will be sustainably produced, targeting a replacement for fossil fuels in air and sea transport. Although the pipeline’s cost is expected to decrease due to the shortening, Denmark and the EU are still far from achieving their previous targets. Nevertheless, these problems do not affect Denmark’s 2030 climate goals.
