Stores may refuse 1000-krone note for small purchases

As of Wednesday, Danish stores can decline 1000-krone bills for purchases below 250 kroner, a change communicated by the Ministry of Business. Initially, the plan was to set the limit at purchases under 500 kroner. The 1000-krone note will become invalid in Denmark on May 31, 2025, part of a phase-out process due to its association with financial crimes, stated by Business Minister Morten Bødskov. The government aimed for a balance that considers the shopping habits of the elderly and singles. Both the Ældre Sagen and the Forbrugerrådet Tænk consumer groups preferred a lower spending limit for using these notes. The recent law aims to reduce the risk of large cash holdings in retail till May next year, increasing safety for store personnel.
