EU backs Greenland and Denmark sovereignty

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, expressed strong support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Greenland and Denmark during a speech at the Royal Danish Defence College in Copenhagen. The support comes as a response to US President Donald Trump’s several recent assertions of wanting American control over Greenland, even speculating on the possibility of annexation. Greenland’s government and all parties in the Greenlandic parliament, Inatsisartut, have unanimously rejected such statements. During a Brussels EU summit on February 3rd, all EU countries stood solidly behind Denmark, with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reaffirming their unanimous support. The issue of potentially seizing territory from another NATO country has garnered international attention, spotlighting the US’s actions.
