Ryanair closes Billund base, ends Aalborg routes

Ryanair is shutting down its Billund base and cutting routes from Aalborg in response to Denmark imposing a 50 DKK passenger fee on flights. Disappointed by the government’s harmful tax, Ryanair couldn’t secure a competitive deal with Billund Airport. This move leads to Denmark losing 1.7 million seats and 32 routes, alongside investments and jobs. Billund Airport personnel received notice of the closure and job relocation offers. Ryanair will transfer operations to countries without flight taxes, such as Sweden, Hungary, and Italy. The passenger fee, which makes flight tickets 30 DKK more expensive, is a modest price for the green transition of aviation, according to Tax Minister Rasmus Stoklund, who is surprised by Ryanair’s decision.
