Løkke: Premature to discuss support for independent Greenland
Danish foreign minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen calls it premature to discuss whether Greenland can expect continued financial support from Denmark after independence. Following a meeting in the Foreign Policy Committee, he highlights that Greenland must pave its own path to economic self-sufficiency, taking full responsibility as an independent country. However, he also cautions against overlooking potential challenges. Currently, the Danish block grant, which is over four billion kroner, and other expenditures amounting to about two billion kroner, are significant to Greenland’s economy. Løkke reminds that half of Greenland’s economy depends on this grant, and services currently provided by Denmark would need to be managed by Greenland itself in the event of independence.
