Majority for easier end-of-life choice

Seven out of eight members of the Committee for a Dignified Death in Denmark suggest legal changes to allow individuals to decide on their end of life. They propose different models including the right to obtain lethal medication and physician assistance in terminal cases. One member, however, opposes changing the law. Currently, euthanasia and assisted suicide are illegal, but the committee is preparing a proposal for the government. The chair, Kathrine Lilleør, emphasizes that majority views do not align with traditional active euthanasia and are intended for those near death. The Danish Ethical Council and physicians strongly oppose euthanasia, equating it to suicide. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen personally supports legal euthanasia.
