Lowest HIV diagnosis among gay men in Denmark

In 2023, Denmark recorded the lowest number of new HIV diagnoses among men who have sex with men since the surveillance began in 1990. The count was 39, a drop from 47 in the previous year. In total, 110 people were diagnosed with HIV, encompassing all groups. The decrease is attributed to the advent of a preventive HIV treatment called PrEP and prompt medical attention that prevents further transmission. Maria Wessman of the State Serum Institute (SSI) highlighted the successful targeted prevention and treatment measures contributing to the fight against the AIDS pandemic. However, there’s a concerning increase in diagnoses among Ukrainian refugees, with 56 cases recorded, 45 of which had been previously under treatment. These statistics emerge ahead of World Aids Day, aiming to raise awareness and support individuals affected by HIV and AIDS.
