Renewal plan for Denmark’s second-largest lake

Over 150 years ago, Jutland’s largest lake, Kolindsund, spanned 2,500 hectares but was drained to create farmland. A recent green tripartite agreement in Denmark could lead to the lake’s restoration, benefiting climate, environment, nature, and local development. The Syddjurs Municipal Council has taken a major step toward this goal with a decisive resolution supported by a significant majority. Mayor Michael Stegger Jensen emphasizes the project’s financial demands but notes new funding opportunities via a green tripartite’s 40 billion kroner land fund. This fund supports projects like soil conversion to reduce nitrogen emissions. The next steps involve liaising with state authorities, neighboring Norddjurs Municipality, and farmers. Djursland Landboforening’s chairman Hans Gæmelke is cautiously attentive to the plans, advocating for a thorough evaluation over hasty solutions.
