Education Minister seeks easier suspension for misbehavior
Education Minister Mattias Tesfaye aims to revise the public school code of conduct to simplify the process of sending misbehaving students home. This follows a survey that found no overall increase in serious violations but noted more outwardly aggressive behavior, especially in younger students, and harsher language usage. Current rules limit sending students home to twice a school year for a certain number of days. Proposed changes are not yet detailed, but Tesfaye encourages the use of existing tools and modernizing the code for better management. Gordon Ørskov Madsen of the Danish Teachers’ Union calls for clearer rules but argues that more expulsions are not the solution, advocating for preventive efforts, including additional teachers and social pedagogical interventions in classrooms. The survey was influenced by concerns raised at Borup School near Køge and Agedrup School in Odense, reporting violent student behavior.
