PFAS Scrutiny in straws and pizza boxes
Denmark’s Food Administration, led by Henrik Dammand, is set to probe the levels of PFAS—harmful substances—in food-related items such as straws and pizza boxes. Two studies have shown high PFAS prevalence in paper and plant-based straws, with PFAS found in 18 out of 20 paper straws in a European study. Since a Danish ban on PFAS in food contact materials lacks enforcement, the true efficacy of the prohibition remains unknown. A control campaign is scheduled for July to address this. PFAS, with over 11,000 variants, have been industrially used for their repellent qualities but are linked to cancer, weakened immunity, and hormonal disruption.
