Hungary continues to block EU aid for Ukraine

Hungary continues to block the disbursement of funds from the European Peace Facility intended for EU countries that supply military equipment to Ukraine. Though the funds have been blocked for a year, European Union’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell indicates that the blockade will persist after a foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels. Hungary’s obstruction does not prevent EU nations from aiding Ukraine but denies them reimbursement from the Facility. Hungary, holding the current EU presidency, is also hampering other decisions on Ukraine and caused dissatisfaction by not hosting foreign minister meetings in Ukraine. The discord between Hungary and the EU, supported by many member countries, is expected to continue. The next ministers’ meeting will take place in Brussels instead of Budapest as a stance against Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for his diplomatic actions with Putin and Xi.
