PM criticizes farming: Wants local pork processing

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressed dissatisfaction with farmers sending pigs to be slaughtered abroad, neglecting Danish slaughterhouses. The closure of two major slaughterhouses in Sæby and Ringsted, resulting in the loss of around 2000 jobs, is largely due to the agricultural practice, she emphasized during a parliamentary question time. Frederiksen urged farmers to shoulder more responsibility for the community by slaughtering pigs within the country, thus supporting local employment. Her comments followed Danish Crown’s recent closure of the Ringsted butcher due to insufficient turnover, eliminating 1200 jobs. An earlier closure occurred in Sæby, costing 800 jobs. Frederiksen highlighted that local job losses occur even without new taxes and called on farmers to prioritize the welfare of local economies and families affected by job cuts.
