Paul Watson from prison cell: Denmark faces a struggle

American-Canadian activist Paul Watson remains committed to his anti-whaling crusade, despite being detained in Nuuk, Greenland, pursuant to a Japanese arrest warrant. Watson, currently 73, is accused by Japanese authorities of assaulting whalers and obstructing their work in Antarctica in 2010. Watson asserts that Denmark faces a difficult situation regarding his possible extradition to Japan, which he contends would be against Denmark’s commitment to human rights. He criticizes Japan’s legal system as ‘medieval’ and expresses satisfaction with his cell in Nuuk, which overlooks the sea. Greenland’s court has ruled to keep Watson detained until September 5. Watson’s fleet is ready to confront whaling by Iceland, Japan, or Norway.
