Wegovy contributed to plus-size store bankruptcy
The popular weight loss drug Wegovy has slimmed down not only many Danes but also the revenues of stores offering XL-sized clothing. Nanna XL, a retailer specializing in plus-sized women’s clothing, has filed for bankruptcy, according to owner Pernille Ibsen. The chain, which operated seven stores, felt the impact as customers lost weight and shopped elsewhere. Besides Wegovy’s impact, challenges like COVID-19, inflation, and increased online shopping have strained the chain. Since its establishment in 1997, Nanna XL grew to a peak of 15 stores across Denmark. Another store, ‘Store Robert’ from Valby, acknowledged a shift in the sizes bought by customers, seeing most sizes drop by one or two XLs due to Wegovy, yet without a general decline in sales.
