South Africa urges court to prevent Gaza famine

South Africa has requested the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to urgently intervene to avert an imminent hunger catastrophe in Gaza, as reported by the South African presidential office. As the risk of a full-blown starvation disaster in Gaza has materialized, the court must act to stop the impending tragedy and ensure that aid reaches the population. Denmark’s Foreign Minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, expressed concern over the Palestinians’ current living conditions in Gaza and called for Israel to increase the delivery of humanitarian aid, maintain the protection of civilians and aid workers according to international humanitarian law. Several EU countries, led by Sweden, have co-signed a letter urging Israel to expedite aid to Gaza. The WHO warned that children have died from starvation in northern Gaza, and many are malnourished. Previously, the ICJ had ordered Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza following a request from South Africa.
