Congressional leaders back Kamala Harris
Democratic congressional leaders, Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, have expressed their support for Kamala Harris as the presidential nominee after Joe Biden decided to withdraw his candidacy. Schumer stated that Biden’s withdrawal offered the Democratic Party the opportunity to unite behind a new nominee. Notable Democratic figures, including President Biden, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and former President Bill Clinton, had already endorsed Vice President Harris. Schumer and Jeffries had delayed their endorsement until Harris secured enough delegates. Biden’s decision followed increasing pressure, especially after a June 27th TV debate against Donald Trump, where Biden faced criticism for appearing incoherent and uncertain. Despite stepping down as a candidate, Biden continues as president, while the Democrats plan to formally choose their nominee in early August before the party’s convention on August 19th.
