Over 24 million books borrowed in 2024
In 2024, there was a rise in physical book loans at libraries in Denmark with 24.1 million books borrowed, marking an increase of 800,000 from the previous year. The physical loans accounted for 68% of total library loans according to Statistics Denmark. Lotte Hviid Dhyrbye from the Think Tank on Future Libraries links the increase to innovative literature promotion and activities driving traffic to libraries. Moreover, there is a growing awareness of the value of reading amidst concerns over screen time affecting concentration. The most frequent borrowers were aged 30-49, comprising 20% of physical loans. Conversely, youth borrowing is low, attributed to social media and other interests. Libraries now focus on reigniting the joy of reading among children through collaborative projects with schools and involving children as reading experts.
