Kamala Harris may secure nomination on August 1
Kamala Harris could be formally designated as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee as early as August 1, if she garners the support of at least 300 state delegates, as noted by the party’s chairman Jamie Harrison, according to Reuters. A vice-presidential nominee could also be chosen within the same timeframe. In U.S. presidential elections, major parties like the Republicans and the Democrats can only endorse one candidate each, selected through a series of primaries. Despite the majority of Democratic delegates initially supporting Joe Biden, they are not legally bound to him and can switch their support to Harris. Harris became the frontrunner after President Biden announced on Sunday he would not seek re-election, with key endorsements from Nancy Pelosi, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. The U.S. presidential election will take place on November 5.
