1st baby group to Egypt

The first group of premature babies evacuated from the hospital in Gaza was taken to Egypt on Monday, according to live images from the Rafah border crossing on the Egyptian TV channel Al Qahera, Reuters writes. A total of 28 have arrived safely in Egypt, the World Health Organisation said. Meanwhile, three have remained in southern Gaza for further treatment. The children were evacuated from the al-Shifa hospital, the largest hospital in Gaza. They were brought to Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip on Sunday to stabilise their condition before heading to Egypt. From there, they were to proceed to the capital Cairo or northern Sinai, Al Qahera reported. The head of the neonatal unit at the hospital in Rafah said the children were in a “catastrophic condition” when they arrived. “Some suffered from malnutrition, others from dehydration and some from low temperatures,” Dr. Mohammad Salama said. “We have been working to bring them into a stable state within 24 hours.” /ritzau/
