Construction begins on Denmark’s largest wind farm

Thor Wind Farm, set to be Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm, is expected to be operational by 2027, providing electricity for a million households. RWE, a German energy company that won the bid in 2021, has now received final establishment permission from the Danish Energy Agency. As RWE shifts from its 100-year history of coal and nuclear power to green energy, the Thor Wind Farm will consist of 72 turbines with a gigawatt capacity. Currently, Denmark has 17 wind farms with a combined capacity of around 2.7 gigawatts. The state is set to earn up to 2.8 billion kroner from the project. However, future offshore wind projects may face financial challenges due to rising interest rates, as seen in the example of Ørsted and concern from the Danish Chamber of Commerce about the feasibility of a new six-gigawatt tender.
