Bavarian lands $63 million mpox vaccine order

Bavarian Nordic, a Danish pharmaceutical company, has secured an order worth $63 million, equivalent to around 422 million Danish kroner, for mpox vaccines from the U.S. government. The firm is to supply one million doses of freeze-dried vaccine by 2026. CEO Paul Chaplin praised the U.S.’s leadership in ensuring the long-term availability of vaccines for public health preparedness. The Danish vaccine has become highly sought after following WHO’s declaration of a global health crisis due to mpox for the second time in two years, with the disease spreading from an outbreak in DR Congo to neighboring countries. Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, generally causes mild illness but can occasionally be fatal. President Joe Biden has announced at the UN General Assembly the donation of one million mpox vaccines to African countries and urged others to aid swiftly.
