Misinformation before Greenland election
Increased great power competition in the Arctic and the upcoming election in Greenland have led to the spread of misinformation, potentially advantageous to foreign states, states the Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET) in a press release. Authorities are monitoring for influence from foreign states concerning the election to the Greenlandic parliament, Inatsisartut. The PET notes that while some foreign interest can be legitimate, illegal influences, especially on social media, exist. Fake profiles impersonating Danish and Greenlandic politicians have been found polarizing the debate, and local politicians’ statements are sometimes misquoted to promote certain views. In response, legislation was passed banning anonymous and foreign donations to political parties, aiming to protect Greenland’s political integrity. This law, however, allows Greenlandic parties to still receive contributions from sister parties in the Danish Parliament and public party support from Denmark.
