Final Cobblestone Uprooted at Pusher Street

On Saturday afternoon, the last cobblestone was removed from Pusher Street in the Christiania district, marking the end of an era for the street known as a hub for hash trade. The removal, which began at 10 AM, was celebrated with applause, cheers, and the playing of the signature song ‘I kan ikke slå os ihjel’ (‘You can’t kill us’). Christiania residents will continue the work on Sunday by digging up the remaining asphalt, with intentions to renovate the surrounding buildings afterward. Mette Prag, a spokesperson for Christiania, shared plans to repurpose the cobblestones for a new natural stone pavement, highlighting the community’s active role in the renovations. Police presence during the day reported a peaceful and positive atmosphere. The closure of Pusher Street was decided in August 2023 in response to violent incidents, including several murders, over recent years.
