Rare finds in Bornholm possibly from Bronze Age
Three unusual burial sites likely from the younger Bronze Age have been discovered underground in Bornholm, as reported by Jens Berthold, Chief Archaeologist at the Bornholm Museum. The findings made in April at a burial ground with over 60 standing stones in the small forest Gryet near Nexø, are 26 meters in length and 4.5 meters in width. Although the exact nature of the burial sites is undetermined due to their subsurface location, geophysical surveys suggest they are elongated mounds with stones, a rarity due to destruction from cultivation. The discoveries were made using ground-penetrating radar by Viennese geophysicists, and the work was funded by Danmarks Naturfond, which owns Gryet. The next steps for research are unclear, but there is a desire to excavate responsibly to learn more, such as obtaining charcoal or remains for dating purposes. Bornholm has 30 similar burial sites, with few others in Denmark.
