Rutte praises Danish PM’s Greenland diplomacy
NATO Secretary-General, Mark Rutte, commended Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s response to Donald Trump’s comments about Greenland. At an EU Parliament debate, Rutte highlighted Frederiksen’s focus on Arctic security rather than an immediate reaction to Trump’s statements. Trump’s recent remarks had insinuated the possibility of using military or economic pressure to control Greenland. Frederiksen, alongside Greenland’s government head, avoided confrontation with Trump and turned attention to the security of the Arctic. The Danish government plans to invest 15 billion kroner in Arctic defenses, including new ships, drones, and updates to the Kangerlussuaq airport for F-35 fighters. Rutte reiterated Trump’s past validity on issues such as underinvestment in European NATO countries and dismissed the notion of a European NATO without the USA, stressing the financial implications and the time required to establish autonomous defense capabilities.
