Danish-German deal to cut train waiting time
Denmark and Germany have signed an agreement to streamline border controls and reduce waiting times for train passengers crossing between the countries. Under the new deal announced by the Danish Ministry of Justice, police in each country can board trains at the moment of crossing the national border, allowing for in-transit checks. Danish Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard emphasized the importance of smooth controls, especially after Germany introduced border checks against Denmark. The new arrangement is anticipated to reduce commuting delays for the many train travelers who cross the border for work, school, or family visits. Previously, Danish police were only able to board trains at the first stop in Denmark. Starting Saturday, the agreement also permits German police in their national uniforms to be present at Danish train stations near the border under specific conditions, and vice versa. Authorities are not allowed to exercise domestic police powers on each other’s territories.
