Nearly a third of Danes never use cash
Cash usage in Denmark is at an all-time low, with nearly one in three Danes never using cash for transactions, an increase from 27% to 28% over the last year. According to Allan Bonke, Danish country manager for Nets, this trend reflects the diminishing need for cash as digital payments become ubiquitous. More consumers leave home without wallets, opting for mobile payments instead. Denmark’s cash usage is lower compared to neighboring Norway and Sweden, where around 40% do not use cash. Nonetheless, 20% of Danes still make cash payments weekly, and exclusive use of mobile payments is on the rise. Contactless card payments are becoming more popular, with Denmark leading the Nordics: 95% of card transactions in the first half of 2024 were contactless, as reported by the annual Nordic payment report from Nets, which surveyed 6,000 respondents, including 1,500 Danish consumers and merchants.
