Løkke celebrates Nuuk’s new airport opening
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen joins the first direct flight from Copenhagen to Nuuk, Greenland, shortening travel times to under five hours. The newly built airport, with a 2,200-meter runway, recently passed final safety tests. The arrival of the inaugural flight will be celebrated with ceremonial activities including a water salute from fire engines, a festive welcome by local schoolchildren, and a music and fireworks show. Jens Lauridsen, CEO of Greenland Airports, expresses excitement for the historic milestone in connecting the capital directly over the Atlantic. Direct flights from Nuuk to New York are expected to increase foreign tourism and strengthen Greenland’s economy, but they also pose a climate paradox for the environmentally-sensitive region. Denmark contributed DKK 700 million to avoid Chinese involvement in its construction, highlighting Greenland’s significant infrastructure advancement.
