Theresa Scavenius forms new party

Theresa Scavenius, previously an independent member of the Danish Parliament after leaving Alternativet, founded the Green Democrats party, voicing concerns over a deficit in democracy and decaying trust in politicians. The party aims to challenge the lack of real opposition at Christiansborg and will focus on meticulous legislative work, transparency, and enabling members to vote based on personal conviction rather than party lines. Scavenius emphasizes that legislators are dealing with more matters in less time, affecting the quality of their work and leading to hastily drafted legislation. The Green Democrats intend to prioritize proactive ‘fireproofing’ policies over reactive ‘firefighting’. Despite the challenge to collect enough signatures for election eligibility and skepticism from political commentators about its potential success, Scavenius believes the party’s platform, offering a broader democratic project, will resonate with voters and lead to better environmental policies.
