Danish parliament adds Greenlandic interpretation

The Danish Parliament will introduce simultaneous interpretation for Greenlandic during selected debates, allowing Greenlandic members to have their speeches and questions translated in real time. This decision, announced by the Parliament’s Presidency, is expected to be challenging due to the difficulty in finding qualified interpreters and is anticipated to be a costly endeavor. The expansion of interpretation services will occur for about ‘a handful’ of annual debates of particular relevance to the Commonwealth. If requested in advance, further debates may include interpretation. The new arrangement, set to be implemented in 2025, will also necessitate physical changes to the Parliament building, including the construction of interpretation booths and related technology, which is estimated to cost around 8.5 million kroner.
