Ariel Henry (center) has previously promised that he would step down in February. But he changed his mind and instead said that he would not leave his position until order is restored in the country. (Archive photo). Photo: Andrew Kasuku/Ritzau Scanpix
Haiti’s PM steps down amid chaos
Haiti’s PM Ariel Henry resigned as gang violence engulfs the country, announced post-Caricom talks by Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali. Henry took office after predecessor Jovenel Moïse’s 2021 assassination. A state of emergency was declared following a massive prison break in Port-au-Prince, with 3700 escapees and 12 fatalities. In Kingston, Caribbean leaders and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken discussed the turmoil, with the U.S. pledging $100 million to aid Haiti. Plans to deploy 1000 Kenyan police are stalled over legal issues. The conflict has displaced over 362,000 Haitians, per the IOM.
