Government promotes CO2 capture project

The Danish government has announced a new tender of 28 billion kroner for CO2 capture and storage, essential for meeting climate goals. The project involves capturing CO2, for instance, from the chimney of a combustion plant, and storing it underground. Energy company Ørsted will store 430,000 tons of CO2 from 2026, equivalent to emissions from over 155,000 cars annually. The new tender aims for a 2.3 million ton reduction by 2030, which is about 6% of Denmark’s annual emissions. Bids must be submitted by December next year, with adjustments made to appeal to more potential participants. CO2 capture and storage are viewed as key to achieving both national and EU climate goals. The European Commission has recommended capturing and storing approximately 50 million tons of CO2 by 2040 for a 90% reduction target. Ørsted has begun constructing two CO2 capture facilities expected to contribute to meeting the 70% reduction target by 2030.
