Per Stig Møller joins Afghanistan inquiry
Former Foreign Minister Per Stig Møller (Conservative People’s Party) tells Berlingske he has decided to participate in a new independent inquiry into Denmark’s efforts in Afghanistan. Initially, Møller had referred the researchers to his book and noted he was involved in a similar inquiry in 2019. His initial refusal, along with former Defense Minister Søren Gade and former Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen’s difficulties in scheduling, has been criticized by sources, including retired generals and union leaders. The inquiry, led by the Danish Institute for International Studies (Diis), aims to learn from the experience in Afghanistan and to understand how the Taliban could regain power. The Danish military mission in Afghanistan, which lasted from 2002 to 2021, ended as the Taliban regained territory and power swiftly in August 2021 amidst a chaotic troop withdrawal.
