Parliament illegal email probe revealed
An internal document unveiled a breach of both criminal law and human rights by Denmark’s Parliament when officials accessed MPs’ email accounts. The lawyer for the state, Kammeradvokaten, ruled the search illegal under criminal law, human rights statutes, and data protection rules. However, they advised not reporting the incident to the police, citing mitigating circumstances and assured no emails were read. The issue surfaced when members and employees of the Danish People’s Party were told to delete an email, exposing the Administration’s email monitoring. Initially justified by a non-existent ‘heightened name ban’ in a police case, the Administration’s actions lacked legal grounds. The Administration admitted the inquiry did not comply with established regulations.
