Greenland wants to probe IUD human rights breaches

Greenland’s government will investigate potential human rights violations related to forced IUD insertions by Danish doctors on local women during the 1960s and 70s. Minister Naaja H. Nathanielsen highlighted the importance of this issue, which Denmark has excluded from the joint investigation. Denmark’s Health Minister, Sophie Løhde, denied the need to focus on human rights in their inquiry. Meanwhile, 143 affected women are suing the Danish state for these violations. During the campaign, about 4,500 Greenlandic women, some just 13, received IUDs without consent. The comprehensive probe to analyze the policy behind these actions is set to finish by 2025.
