Løkke: Greenland sale to the US ‘impossible’

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen reiterated Denmark’s position that it had no interest in ceding Greenland to the United States, following remarks by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio that President Donald Trump’s desire to buy the territory was not a joke. Løkke emphasized that Greenlanders are a people and the country is protected under the UN Charter, making such a sale impossible in a modern society. Both Denmark and the U.S. share mutual interests, particularly concerning Arctic security. Løkke mentioned these overlapping interests could lead to a viable solution through substantive discussions. Rubio acknowledged that public negotiations were counterproductive. A phone call between Løkke and Rubio occurred last Friday, with a future meeting planned to discuss Arctic security involving Denmark, the U.S., and Greenland.
