Smukfest aims for 90% waste recycling

As Smukfest, the famed Danish festival, concludes, a major clean-up and sorting effort is underway to reach an ambitious goal of recycling 90% of the festival’s waste by 2029. Over the last three years, Smukfest has managed to collect about 80% of waste for recycling, including the recycling of nine tons of plastic last year. Early indications this year suggest less waste and more recycling. Sustainability Coordinator Cathrine Christensen states that achieving the final 10% will require significant efforts. Future plans include imposing a deposit for clean campsites. This year marked the festival’s first use of reusable cups, with an impressive 94% return rate, surpassing the 75% target. Along with recycling, Smukfest aims to reduce its carbon footprint through renewable energy and electric vehicles by 2029.
