Expert Panel: Beef Tax Hike Could Be Minor
An expert group, the Svarer Committee, estimates a maximum increase of 4.5 DKK for a 500g pack of Danish ground beef with the highest proposed agricultural CO2 tax set at 750 DKK per ton. For the same product, increases would be 2.3 DKK and 1.4 DKK with a tax of 375 DKK and 125 DKK per ton, respectively. Milk price would rise by 0.6 DKK per liter under the highest tax rate, and by 0.3 and 0.2 DKK for the lower rates. The committee expects no significant impact on income inequality after price and wage adjustments. Recommendations from the report are not final and will be negotiated within a green tripartite consisting of the government, agricultural, and environmental organizations. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has previously stated her reluctance to increase prices on common foods.
