Social Democrats firm on pension plan amid opposition

In Denmark, the Social Democrats assert that meeting NATO’s power targets and investing in a fair pension system are compatible objectives, despite resistance from liberal party Venstre. Venstre, led by Troels Lund Poulsen, argued against halting the pension age increase, suggesting it might compromise national security investments. However, Christian Rabjerg Madsen of the Social Democrats contends that it’s a matter of political choices and insists on pursuing economic policies that support both defense and pension investments. Despite their differing views on pensions, Madsen acknowledges the need for more climate protection, as suggested by Poulsen, and is open to discussing a new national compromise with government partners such as The Moderates, who also express willingness for discussion, recalling the previous consensus in 2022 for increased defense spending after Ukraine was invaded.
