Holck extradition on weapons drop in West Bengal halted

The prosecution is appealing to the Eastern High Court after a lower court in Hillerød ruled against the extradition of Niels Holck to India, due to concerns that he might face torture or degrading treatment. Niels Holck is involved in a 1995 incident, where he airdropped weapons to a West Bengal insurgency, and has since avoided capture unlike his accomplices who were arrested in India. Despite new assurances from India, including a special jail placement and the accompaniment of Danish police, the judge in Hillerød upheld the previous decision from 2011, stating that there have been no significant changes in India’s conditions. The risk of violating human rights conventions remains significant, as per the judgment.
